Could one of the easiest ways to slash calories be as simple as drinking a big glass of water before we eat? Yes, according to a recent study by the University of Birmingham in the UK.

Researchers found that people who drank about 16 ounces (two big glasses) of plain water about 30 minutes before either some or all of their three daily meals lost between five and nine pounds over the course of about three months.
The group that drank the water ate fewer calories during the meal. Why? Well, drinking water takes up space in your stomach. This, in turn, makes it harder to eat more and also helps you make smart food choices during the meal because you're already a tad full.
With so many of us indulging this holiday season, this is an easy trick to try to slash a few calories at a lunch or dinner. It's also a good habit to adopt if you're going to try to lose weight when the new year begins. The key is drinking a non-caloric beverage like water, not diet soda.
