Want to stay lean and healthy? Don't diet.
Severely restricting your calories isn't a longterm weight loss solution. You absolutely cannot stay sane or fueled on 1200 calories a day or on some wacky diet that only includes bacon and beef.
Restrictive diets don't work.

Cornell University's Food and Brand Lab recently concluded that people who have maintained a healthy weight throughout their lives (not gaining more than 10 pounds over the course of their lives) didn't diet. 74% of them reported that they never or rarely dieted. 92% DID say the were conscious about what they ate.
Think about that distinction for a moment? It's not about dieting. It's about being conscious of what you consume: ensuring your diet is full of quality foods.

What are some of the tricks to being conscious about eating well and living a lean life? Well, according to the 147 people in the study it means the following:
- 96% of them ate breakfast regularly
- 42% of them exercised at least five times per week
- Half of them weighed themselves every week
They also incorporated simple, smart strategies into their daily diets such as cooking meals at home, practicing mindful eating and eating high-quality, non-processed foods.
These, at heart, aren't diet strategies. These are habits that lead to healthier and, generally, leaner lifestyles. Cornell calls it "Mindlessly Slim" and I think that's the perfect description.

My experience going from a fat-arse to losing weight and keeping it off more than a decade.
I was a fat ass. A big one. The funny thing was that I was always dieting. Whether it was eating just turkey breast or consuming nothing but diet bars and shakes all day, I wasn't fulfilled from a food standpoint. I was hungry and felt deprived. In turn, I would get frustrated and binge. It was a vicious cycle that made me tip the scales at more than 200 pounds.
Once I started eating real food and substantial meals featuring protein and produce, the weight dropped. The funny thing is that I don't feel deprived at all. I enjoy my favorite indulgences, such as cookies, ice cream and chocolate, weekly. I don't indulge every day...okay maybe I do have some chocolate every day. But the key is enjoying and savoring your favorite treats so that you don't feel deprived.
